About Eden’s Stewards

Eden Stewards, is an environmental wing of Nairobi Chapel Ongata Rongai. It is registered as a community Based Organization, with a constitution that guides its operation, but with open membership. Persons from other churches and faiths are allowed to join, with the goal of transforming the environment and society we live in for accelerated realization of the constitutional right of a clean and health environment. We have a conviction that although we belong to different religions we share the same environment and suffer equally when it is degraded. We also share and aspire to some common values such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self control, which Christians call fruits of the Holy spirit (Galatians 5: 22).

Gen 2:15 and Colosians 1: 19 provides the scriptural basis upon which Edens Stewards Ministry is anchored.

Gen 2:15 Then the Lord God placed the Man in the Garden to cultivate it and guard it. Further Psalms21: 1-2 states that the earth is the Lords and everything in it. This is where stewardship is derived.

Colossians 1:19 states, For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Before sin the Garden of Eden was the ideal state, but after sin man and all creation was alienated from the creator, with death as the consequence. Environmental degradation thus stems from man’s rebellion.

Our focus of providing a neutral platform, for collective action towards a restored environment fits within the purpose for which we were created.

How did Eden Stewards Ministry start? It started through a Plug In discussion in Feb 2018. Plug In is a ten week Bible study experience that helps to plug In new beginners into God, Church, Community and Destiny.

The Plug In Study Group comprised of the following members

  1. Rudolf Makhanu ( facilitator)
  2. Grace Katunge
  3. Wangari Kiboi
  4. Olivia Amollo
  5. Peter Wangari
  6. Stephane Wangari
  7. Anne Wangari
  8. Dennis Mwangi
  9. Jane Kerubo

It must have been Gods plan, for it was a multi-disciplinary Group, with a lawyer, environmental activist, Banker, Marketer, Programs specialist, and entrepreneur. We were studying Week 7, whose main lessons were Gods mission, Engaging the powers, Caring for our Environment and Gods vision for the World.

While sharing our experiences, it was evident we were all angry and frustrated with the state of the environment in Rongai and had a burning desire to change it but we were unclear how to do it. Sorry, but we even contemplated suing the County Government, out of the frustration. Main concerns were; effluent pollution with owners of apartments/plot owners channeling raw sewage across homes into rivers, littering, plastic pollution, with inadequate bins for waste collection, ugly streets with no tree/urban forestry and ineffective enforcement of public health legislation. Everyone was blaming the county government.

While still unsure how to deal with the environmental ills, we learned about UN Environments new initiative of engaging with Faith Based Organizations to contribute to realization of Sustainable Development Goals. We realized that most of the environmental degradation challenges directly relates with specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as goal 13 on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; goal 6 on clean water and sanitation, and goal 14 on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources. We did an email to UN Environment Executive director, and was linked to Dr. Iyad Abumoghli, who amazingly responded to the email within two hours. The rest is history. Dr Abumoghli is results oriented, patient, and very kind.

Later, we were introduced to Eva Komba program coordinator, Kajiado County, who has ably guided us to synergize and work closely with the county government. We are grateful to many more partners that are closely working with Edens Stewards Ministry.

More important, we are grateful to Rev Ondachi and the entire leadership of Nairobi Chapel Ongata Rongai for believing in us, supporting and guiding us and urging us on whenever we felt low.

Eden’s Stewards Ministry has steadily expanded from 9 members in February 2018 to over 70 members currently, majority being fully paid up members. We request those that have not joined to do so.

Our priority now is developing a strategic plan and annual work plan, having a physical office, and mobilizing funds towards realizing our objectives.
